The New Jersey School Development Council (NJSDC) is a cooperative, not-for-profit network of educational agencies and school districts joined together to mutually benefit from the discussion and exploration of emerging issues and concerns relevant to leadership in education.

For over 50 years, the New Jersey School Development Council has provided education leadership in New Jersey. We invite all forward-looking school districts to join us. Please see our Documents Page for enrollment & registration forms.

The Council undertakes a variety of activities towards our goal, including (a) provision of informative and relevant conferences; (b) provision of in-service training; (c) forums for discussion of appropriate topics; and (d) special projects, as designated by the Council's Executive Committee.

The Council's goal is to provide educational leadership in New Jersey through its varied activities, such as conducting public conferences on topics of emerging concern and a Leadership Institute on Strategies for School Improvement. A major focus of the Council's activities is the implementation of sound educational policy decisions and the examination of the implications arising from research data.

Headquartered for over 50 years in the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education, the Council operates under the jurisdiction of its Executive Committee, an elected policy-making body.

The New Jersey School Development Council offers professional development strands in specific areas. These strands are offered in conjunction with faculty and staff from Rutgers Graduate School of Education, local school district personnel and national consultants. The selected topics for each year's program are chosen from an annual need assessment of the membership conducted during the spring. The Council works with leadership from the GSE to identify presenters for each of the sessions. A calendar of professional development topics, dates, and presenters is sent out each fall to member school districts. Registration is accepted from member school districts first and, as space allows, from non-member districts. The professional development strands include the following:

Leadership Institute : The Council offers specific one day workshops for district leaders based on the annual needs assessment as well as current State and National issues impacting leadership. These sessions are specifically planned for central office and school based leaders. Recent topics have included: Closing the Achievement Gap, Data Driven Decision Making, Differentiated Staffing and Evaluation and High Stakes Testing. Members may participate in these as individual workshops or in conjunction with the Study Council.

Instructional Improvement Strand : These sessions are offered for classroom teachers and supervisors. The instructional focus area for each academic year is, again, determined by membership needs and currents trends in instruction. The Council secures the services of outstanding presenters in instructional areas that include: mathematics, literacy, special needs, related arts and classroom management as well as many other selected areas.
